February 10, 1981

China has put the first Chinese-made atomic reactor into operation in the southwestern city of Chengdu, the official New China News Agency said. It said operation of the "large, high- flux test and research atomic reactor" showed it was functioning satisfactorily and safely. "China is now able to design, manufacture, and build nuclear power stations independently," an official in charge of the project said. Its multipurpose design means it can be used for a wide range of tasks, from testing the effects of neutrons on materials to production of radioactive isotopes, the agency said.
