Domestic auto sales down 20% for January

February 6, 1981

Reports that domestic car sales for January dropped 20 percent offer little hope the auto industry's long depression will end soon. It was a familiar tale -- domestic sales down significantly, import market share up. US automakers said domestic car sales in January were at the lowest level of car sales for the month since 1975. One consolation was that January sales were a slight improvement over December sales. And Chrysler sales posted a modest 2 percent gain.
