Inside Report (2)

February 6, 1981

Afghan guerrillas are being trained at 80 camps in Pakistan, by Pakistani officers -- if a recent Soviet publication can be believed. The article also claims that 40,000 Afghan guerrillas are being trained in China and that, together with their instructors, bands of them have swooped back into their homeland to strike at Soviet targets.

Analysts in the West are intrigued by the report, but they also are aware that the magazine in which it appears, Soviet Fighting Man, is a propaganda vehicle.

Pakistan, sobered by the presence of Soviet troops on its western border, is tight-lipped abo ut any assistance it may be providing the Afghans.m
