Chirac tosses his chapeau to try to oust Giscard

Gaullist leader Jacques Chirac announced his candidacy for the French presidency with an appeal for national renewal under his leadership. Mr. Chirac , who was President Valery Giscard d'Estaing's prime minister for more than two years, until August 1976, has become a political foe of the head of state. The Gaullist leader, whose party is the biggest group in the National Assembly, had long been expected to challe nge the President.
