Group to gauge TV smut, seek sponsor boycotts

February 3, 1981

A religious-backed group announced it will monitor television programs for sexually suggestive language, violence, and profanity with an eye to boycotting advertisers on offending shows. The "Coalition for Better Television" said it would equip several hundred monitors with score cards for a three-month review beginning in March. The group will select one or more advertisers and". . . ask for a one-year voluntary boycott of all their products," said the group chairman who is affiliated with the United Methodist Church and is head of the National Federation for Decency.
