Chun asks UN chief to prod Pyongyang

February 2, 1981

President Chun Doo Hwan of South Korea, on an 11-day visit to the United States, has asked UN Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim to help persuade North Korean President Kim II Sung to agree to exchange visits with the southern leader and apply separately for UN membership. The North Koreans, aiming for a unified Communist Korea, have rejected both proposals, saying such moves would perpetuate the division between the two countries. A spokesman for Mr. Chun said the President wanted the exchange visits made without regard to the countries' differences.
