Greece, US holding talks on the tab for US bases

January 28, 1981

Greece opened talks with the United States on a new agreement on the status and operation of American military bases on its territory. The talks follow Greece's return last October to NATO's unified military command, from which it withdrew in August 1974. The talks concern four major US bases that are vital for NATO monitoring of Soviet activities. Athens is seeking increased US military aid in return for the ba ses.
