Warsaw unionists plan strike to win Saturdays

January 27, 1981

The powerful Warsaw branch of the Solidarity free trade union and militant peasants unveiled strike plans as the ruling Communists Party Politburo met with party boss Stanislaw Kania. The Warsaw branch called for a general strike throughout the region next week in a bid to force the government to deliver on promises made to strikers last summer. At the same time, militant peasant farmers announced plans to launch strikes on Wednesday to press demands for their own union.
