The Soviet Union goes into the dock next week at a "show trial" in Stockholm. An international court there intends to probe the case of Raoul Wallenberg, the so- called "lost hero of the Holocaust."

Wallenberg became a legend for his efforts to save the lives of more than 20, 000 Jews while attached to the Swedish diplomatic mission in Budapest in 1944. But when the Red Army marched into that city in 1945, he was suspected of spying and was taken to Moscow where, according to the Russians, he died in prison in 1947.

Since then, there have been persistent reports that he is still alive. According to the latest of these, Wallenberg, now 68, is in a special camp for prisoners who have been officially declared dead.

These reports and other evidence that has been accumulated over the years will be presented to the internat ional panel.
