Louisiana judge conducts girls to all-white school

January 7, 1981

A state court judge, using a smalltown constable to back up his action, took three white girls to an all-white high school Tuesday, defying federal court orders in a desegregatin confrontation. Buckeye High School Principal Charles Waites said he allowed the girls to attend because he was under the threat of arrest and did not want to make "a big scene."

State police Monday escorted the three girls into class under orders of state District Judge Richard Lee. But US District Judge Nauman Scott expanded his court orders and forced the troopers to stay away Tuesday.
