The South Korean martial-law commander, Gen. Lee Hui song, confirmed capital punishment sentences on three people convicted in connection with an armed uprising last May. A lower military court sentenced them to death for sedition in the provincial capital of Kwangju, where the martial-law authorities say about 190 people were killed. Kim Dae Jung, a former presidential candidate, is awaiting the result of his appeal to the Supreme Court against a death sentence on charges of sedition imposed by a military tribunal in September.
