More people emigrating as recession grips Britain

December 29, 1980

Deepening economic recession is boosting emigration from Britain, The Times of London reported. Applications to move to Australia reached nearly 10,000 in October, more than double the total for the same month last year, it said. New Zealand, Canada, and South Africa also reported increased inquiries, and there was growing evidence that more skilled Britons than ever before were seeking new lives elsewhere in the European community, the report said.
