President Antonio Ramalho Eanes named Social Democratic leader Francisco Pinto Balsemao, a newspaper editor, Portugal's new prime minister. Earlier, Mr. Pinto Balsemao was picked by his party to succeed the late Prime Minister Francisco Sa Carneiro, who as killed in a plane crash. Mr. Pinto Balsemao has said his new government of Social Democrats, Christian Democrats, and monarchists will be sworn in between Jan. 5 and 12.
