Israeli opposition leader gets a push toward power

The leader of Israel's opposition Labor Party, Shimon Peres, fought off a challenge by former Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and won a party election with over 70 percent of the 3,000 delegates' votes at a convention here. With a general election due in the next 11 months and the government of Prime Ninister Menachem Begin lagging badly in opinion polls, the result gives Mr. Peres a strong chance of becoming prime minister in 1981.
