Electoral College sits today to name Reagan

December 15, 1980

Republicans and Democrats gather in state capitals today (Dec. 15) to cast the official electoral votes that will lead to Ronald Reagan's inauguration as president. When voters went to the polls Nov. 4, they did not actually vote for presidential candidates. They voted for electors, who, as decreed by the Constitution, cast the actual ballots for the man who will sit in the White House for the next four years.
