E. Germany OKs choice of Bonn's 'ambassador'

December 2, 1980

East Germany has approved West Germany's nomination for a new representative in East Berlin, a post equivalent to ambassador in all but name, a Bonn government spokesman said. This represents a slight thaw in East-West German relations, which took a sharp chilly turn in October after East Germany increased currency exchange requirements for visitors. The new representative will be Klaus Bolling, a West German government spokesman. He will probably take up his post in February, replacing Gunter Gaus, who has held the post for more than seven years.
