Southern California fights fresh series of brush fires

A series of brush and timber fires whipped by winds gusting to 60 m.p.h. hit southern California, destroying more than 260 homes, charring more than 30,000 acres, and forcing up to 15,000 people to evacuate their homes. More than 2,000 federal, state, and local firefighters were battling the blazes.
