Centrists in Peru head for municipal victory

November 25, 1980

Peru's ruling centrist party headed for an apparently comfortable victory in the country's first municipal elections in 14 years. Partial results showed the Popular Action Party, led by President Fernando Belaunde Terry, leading its conservative and left- wing opponents in Lima and most provinces. The elections were the first test of popularity for the government since Popular Action won general elections last May, putting an end to 12 years of military rule.
