Cease-fire in the offing in Chad's internal strife

November 25, 1980

The two main factions in Chad's civil war may sign a cease-fire agreement here Friday, a broadcast from the Togolese capital said. A draft agreement was worked out in Conakry, Guinea, at an unofficial meeting held during a specialized Organization of African Unity conference.

Chad, a central African territory which won independence from France in 1960, has a recent years been riven by tribal and ethnic rivalries. The main struggle has been between the president of Chad's transitional government, Goukhouni Woddei and his former defense minister, Hissein Habre. Radio Lome said the draft cease-fire agreement was hammered out with the help of the two rivals.
