Opening statements due in Garwood turncoat trial

Opening statements are scheduled today (Nov. 13 in the court-martial of Pfc. Robert R. Garwood, the only Vietnam-era serviceman to be tried as a turncoat. The marine, who reteurned to the United States in March 1979 after nearly 14 years behind enemy lines, is accused of collaboration with the Viet Cong, desertion, and physical and verbal assault on American POWs. He faces a possible life sentence if convicted.His attorneys said they plan a defense on psychiatric grounds, and will argue that he was brainwashed.
