Senate Democrats decide not to file tax-cut bill

November 13, 1980

Democratic senators voted not to introduce tax-cut legislation after President Carter threatened to veto such a bill. Senate majority leader Robert Byrd said after a closed-door Senate Democratic Caucus meeting that the decision was based on a feeling that President-elect Reagan should "have his time at bat" on the issue. House Speaker Thomas O'Neill earlier told reporters that Mr. Carter had telephoned hom to say he would veto a tax-cut bill, because it would be "tremendously inflationary."
