UN Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim, responding to appeals by UN staff, agreed to a preliminary inquiry into rumors of corruption among UN employees. Mr. Waldheim discussed the situation with staff council president Lowell Flanders at Mr. Flanders' request. A staff council official said the meeting was fairly productive and that Mr. Waldheim agreed to the setting up of a two-member panel, representing his administration and the staff. the panel will see if there is enough evidence to launch a broader inquiry into charges of payoffs for jobs and promotions in the Secretariat.
