Iran journalist on trial on charges of US spying

November 5, 1980

An Iranian journalist went on trial before a revolutionary court on charges of spying for the United States, the Kayhan newspaper reported. It said Simon Farzami was arrested on the strength of documents found in the US Embassy. He was alleged to have maintained links with the American hostages before the embassy was seized. The paper said shredded documents put together by the students who seized the hostages showed he had given secret information to US diplomats. He is also charged with providing information about the identity of Palestinian officials in Iran and is said to have made frequent visits to the United States and Europe. Mr. Farzami was editor of the French-language newspaper Journal de Teheran, which ceased publication shortly after the Iranian revolution.
