Democracy gains in Zanzibar

Zanzibar moved one step closer to the constitutional procedures of the rest of Tanzania Oct. 30 when Aboud Jumbe was sworn in as the island's first elected President, Monitor correspondent Geoffrey Godsell writes. Mr. Jumbe, a native Zanzibar, has in fact held the office since April 1972, concurrently serving as Vice-President of Tanzania. But until this week's elections in Tanzania, he had held the presidency of Zanzibar by nomination, not election.
