Texas politician awaits verdict in 'Brilab' case

October 22, 1980

A quick verdict was not expected in the FBI "Brilab" case against Texas House Speaker Bill Clayton, who faces up to 60 years in prison if the jury decides he accepted $5,000 in exchange for influencing the handling of a $76 million state employees' insurance contract. The government based its case on tapes recorded by racketeer-turned-FBI informer Joseph Hauser, who went to Texas last summer on a mission financed by the Justice Department to find public and union officials susceptible to bribes. Mr. Clayton was indicted on charges he accepted $5,000 during a discussion on how to reopen bidding on the state employees' health policy.
