Antinuclear groups vow to clse Dutch A-plant

Thousands of antinuclear demonstrators blockaded the Netherlands' nly nuclear power station, vowing to close it down. The protesters -- estimated by police at 2,500, by a protester committee at more than 10,000, and by journalists at just over 5,000 -- said they oppose plans to expand the plant. No violence was reported as police and demonstrators taunted and teased each other. The Dodewaard plant was built in 1968 as an experimental statin and supplies less than 1 percent of total Dutch generating capacity. The government proposes to build three additional plants, each with a 1,000-megawatt capacity, in the next decade.
