Islamic group leader tries again to halt Iraq-Iran war

October 14, 1980

The Secretary-General of the Islamic Conference organization, Habib Chatti, will travel to Iraq and Iran in another attempt to end the Persian Gulf war. Mr. Chatti and Pakistani President Zia ul-Haq visited the warring countries shortly after the start of the war on a mission set up by the 40- nation Islamic Conference. The visit produced no results.

Meanwhile, Iran told the United Nations it has no intention of interfering with peaceful shipping in the Persian Gulf war zone and said it was not responsible for any of the casualties or damage suffered so far.
