Carter tries his new style: attacks without the barbs

President Carter strongly criticized Ronald Reagan's foreign and domestic policies Thursday, but dropped the personal attacks he says he regrets having made in the past.

Mr. Carter, accused by many political commentators of conducting a mean re-election campaign, displayed his new style while campaigning here.

Meanwhile, Mr. Reagan was endorsed by the 30,000-member National Maritime Union. It was his second endorsement from part of the traditionally Democratic labor movement; earlier he was endorsed by the 2 million-member International Brotherhood of Teamsters.
