Premier who quit asked to form Belgian Cabinet

October 8, 1980

King Baudouin accepted the resignation of the Belgian government and immediately asked Prime Minister Wilfried Martens to form a new one. Party leaders had met with Mr. Martens into the early hours Tuesday to discuss a new formula for achieving much-needed cuts in public spending. But the French-and Dutch-speaking Liberals, seeking greater cuts in social spending, remained split from the Social Christians and Socialists. A public debt of $8.3 billion, the worst unemployment in the Common Market, and a big social security shortfall caused the crisis.
