Broad grouping of French protest synagogue bomb

October 8, 1980

All of France's major political groupings, together with trade unions and human right groups, took part in a demonstration to protest a bomb attack that killed four people outside a synagogue last week. The march at first looked as if it might turn into an antigovernment rally with a predominant left-wing participation, until both the Gaullist Party and President Valery Giscard d'Estaing's conservative and centrist supporters joined in.
