Jenrette Abscam case given to the jury
October 8, 1980
Washington
The jury at Rep. John W. Jenrette Jr.'s Abscam trial was asked to weigh his claim that the FBI set a trap for him against the government's argument that he was willing to take a bribe. The case went to the jury after the judge instructed the panel on the law. The South Carolina Democrat is on trial for conspiring to take $100,000 bribe in exchange for sponsoring a private immigration bill for a fictitious Arab sheikh. A defense lawyer urged the jury to acquit Mr. Jenrette of charges, maintaining he was set up by FBI agents who tried to get him to commit a crime by plying him with drinks.
