Chinese protest to USSR over border incident

October 7, 1980

Shooting broke out on the border between the Soviet Union and China, killing two people, and the Chinese Foreign Ministry strongly protested the "armed provocation" to Moscow. Radio Peking said four Soviet soldiers crossed into Inner Mongolia and killed one person, then exchanged fire with Chinese border guards who sped to the scene. One Soviet soldier was killed and the three others fled back across the border. China warned that the Soviet Union must bear all consequences for the provocation.
