US says Cuban refugees on schedule for Arkansas

October 7, 1980

State Department officials are confident they can finish consolidating 6,600 more Cuban refugees here -- the cold-weather center for those who still have no American home -- by Oct. 15. The final phase of the plan began with the first of three flights of refugees from Fort Indiantown Gap, Pa., the last refugee camp to be emptied for the winter. About 3,000 refugees have already arrived from Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., and Fort McCoy, Wis. When all the refugees have arrived, officials will concentrate on finding sponsors.
