Oil boom lets Alaska wipe out income tax

Alaska's lawmakers and the governor have enacted probably the most popular legislation ever adopted here -- repeal of the state's 31-year-old income tax. The state government has taken in so much money because of Alaska's oil boom in recent years that politicians called for an end to the income-tax law. The legislation also provides for a refund of income taxes, estimated to total nearly $200 million, collected in 1979 and the first four months of this year.
