Political-action committees push hard in Senate races

September 26, 1980

Common Cause says reports filed with the Federal Election Commission show that in the 18 months ending June 30, Senate candidates received $5.3 million from political-action committees. The activist groups are mostly single-issue efforts that target their funds to support candidates favoring their view or to defeat candidates opposed t it. Common Cause says 25 candidates for the 34 Senate seats at stake each have raised more than $100,000 from the committees.
