Gang youths suggested for policing L.A. buses

September 25, 1980

Youth gang members may soon be called upon to protect passengers on violence-ridden buses, following approval of a request by Los Angeles County Supervisor Kenneth Hahn that officials study the idea of using federal funds to train gang members as undercover security officers aboard rapid-transit buses.

"Why can't we take young people who are inclined toward violence and turn them around 180 degrees," Mr. Hahn asked, "so that instead of causing trouble they are helping to prevent trouble?"

A recommendation was also made that senior citizens be trained and hired for similar posts.
