West Berlin to limit entry of Soviet Jews

September 25, 1980

West Berlin will no longer grant residence permits to Soviet Jews who arrive in the city without entry visas. Only Soviet Jews joining relatives already in West Berlin are exempted from the ban. Others arriving with exit visas for Israel but without entry papers for West Berlin will be asked to leave after four weeks or face deportation. The ban revokes a special ruling adopted by West Berlin's Senate in 1974 granting residence to Soviet Jews without visas. Berlin's Jewish leaders endorse the ban, a government spokesman said.
