Belgian machine gun passes a test for US use

September 24, 1980

The Army has chosen a Belgian machine gun for further tests to determine whether it is suitable for the infantry, the Defense Department says. The 5.56 -mm "Minimi" machinegun, manufactured by Fabrique Nationale Herstal SA, won an evaluation trial over two American models and the West German HK model, but will be subjected to an additional year of tests so any necessary modifications can be made before an order is filled.
