Striking Berlin railwaymen ejected from control areas

Strike leaders say police employed by the East German "Reichsbahn" railway company broke into nine signal boxes with axes and crowbars and threw out striking West Berlin railwaymen. This left the strikers, involved in a week-old dispute to press demands for higher pay and greater trade union rights, holding only the Reichsbahn's container depot in West Berlin. The leaders had appealed to the West Berlin government to take control of all railway operations in the city, which are run by East Germany, but Mayor Dietrich Stobbe rejected the demand.
