House votes to block A-fuel sale to India

September 19, 1980

The House of Representatives voted 298 to 98 to block the US sale of nuclear fuel to India, leaving the administration to fight the decisive battle on the issue in the Senate next Tuesday. The administration believes it has a better chance to win approval of the sale in the Senate, although the Foreign Relations Committee voted 8 to 7 against it. Both chambers must vote to bar the fuel shipments to override President carter's decision last June to grant licenses for the sale.
