US announces plan to cut south Florida refugee flow

September 19, 1980

The White House announced a three-point plan to reduce the influx of Cuban and Haitian refugees into south Florida and ease the financial burden on local authorities there.

The White House said its new plan would acknowledge federal responsibility for the burden on state and local governments, strengthen law enforcement efforts to bar additional illegal immigrants, and close some refugee centers in south Florida. It would now be official US policy to settle new arrivals outside south Florida unless they had family in the area.
