Carter names board of synfuels unit

President Carter has named the six board members of the new Synthetic Fuels Corporation, including Lane Kirkland, president of the AFL-CIO; Interior Secretary Cecil Andrus; Frank Cary, chairman of IBM; and Catherine Cleary, adjunct professor at the University of Wisconsin School of Business Administration. The Corporation is authorized to spend $88 billion to help private industry produce 2 billion barrels a day by 1992 of liquid and gaseous fuel from coal, tar sands, shale, biomass, and other domestic resources. Mr. Carter also named Deputy Energy Secretary John Sawhill as board chairman. He must be confirmed by the Senate.
