Pity the poor candidates

Isn't it nice not to be a presidential candidate? If you are not Ronald Reagan you do not have to be kept to a script, as his aides have been keeping him lately; you can make all the ad-lib remarks you want. If you are not John Anderson you do not have to hold back on your natural moralizing, as he said he was going to try to do; you can be just as sanctimonious as you want. If you are not Jimmy Carter you do not have to stay away from debating, which he lobes to do but won't under present conditions; you can debate as much as you want. Of course, if you do what you want, you might never be president.
