Shellfish harvesting has been banned along Maine's 3,500-mile coastline after 11 tourists reportedly came down with shellfish poisoning caused by "red tide." Deputy Marine Resources Commissionr Richard P. Choate stressed the closure did not apply to lobsters, crabs, and some other species of seafood. Red tide is caused by an alga that contaminates marine mollusks, giving seawater a reddish tinge.
