Dissident Russian priest gets 5 years' hard labor

August 29, 1980

Gleb Yakunin, a dissident Russian Orthodox priest, was sentenced by a Moscow court Thursday to five years' hard labor and five years' internal exile, his wife, Iraida, said. Mr. Yakunin, who founded and headed an unofficial group called the Christian Committee for the Defense of Believers' Rights, was charged with anti-Soviet propaganda and agitation.

Throughout the trial, the first major dissident trial to be held in Moscow since mid-1978, militiamen and KGB security police barred the courtroom to relatives, friends and Western correspondents.
