Montreal convicts free hostages and surrender

August 29, 1980

Nine armed convicts freed 11 hostages they had held for four days and surrendered to authorities at the top- security Laval Prison Thursday. The prisoners, most of them convicted murderers, seized 12 hostages Monday morning in a desperate attempt to escape from the maximum-security jail. One convict was killed in an abortive attempt to hijack a garbage truck. Three hostages were released early in the morning and the other eight freed after negotiations with prison officials.
