Early 'Euromissile' talks are expected next month

August 28, 1980

The United States and the Soviet Union will probably hold preliminary talks next month about limiting intermediate-range missiles in Europe, Western diplomats said Wednesday. In the past week Soviet President Leonid Brezhnev sent personal letters to President Carter and other NATO leaders alleging, according to US officials that NATO has been stalling on the discussions.

Diplomatic sources say Secretary of State Edmund Muskie may possibly discuss the so-called "Euromissile" negotiations with Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko while both are attending the UN General Assembly. They could not say whether that meeting would amount to a start of formal negotiations.
