ERA supporters decry conviction

August 25, 1980

Angry and shocked Equal Rights Amendment supporters charged Saturday that the bribery conviction of Wanda Brandstetter was part of a "right-wing effort to defeat the ERA." Ms. Brandstetter was found guilty Friday of bribing a state lawmaker for a favorable ERA vote and faces a possible seven-year prison sentence and a $10,000 fine. She has vowed to fight her conviction. The judge in the case has scheduled a hearing for Oct. 10, and if the conviction is not then set aside Ms. Brandstetter will be sentenced on Nov. 7.
