Special jobless aid on tap for 310,000 auto workers

August 15, 1980

The Labor Department said Thursday about 310,000 automobile workers are now eligible for special payments to offset unemployment caused by sales of imported cars. Under a 1974 law they can receive up to 70 percent of their weekly wage from the government for up to 18 months. Between 200,000 and 250,000 auto workers are receiving such payments and the rest will when paper work is processed.
