US plans 'volcano sale' -- timber from St. Helens

August 15, 1980

Timber left from the May 18 eruption of Mt. St. Helens will be offered for sale this winter or next spring by the US Forest Service and the Washington Department of Natural Resources. The Forest Service said Thursday it will begin salvage sales in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest on Oct. 1 unless geologist believe logging would be unsafe.

The Washington State agency plans to offer about 112 million board feet in its salvage sales this winter or early next spring. An addition 600 million to 1 billion board feet will be offered to timber bidders for logging in 1981-84.
